In a momentous achievement, Ohio State University’s esteemed drum major, Clayton Callender, has been honored with the Best Drum Major Gold Medal at the World Collegiate Marching Band Championships. This prestigious accolade recognizes Callender’s exceptional leadership, unparalleled skill, and unwavering dedication to the art of marching band performance.

A Journey of Dedication and Excellence

Callender’s passion for marching band leadership ignited during his freshman year at Dover High School. Inspired by former Ohio State drum major Konner Barr, he embarked on a journey to master the intricate art of twirling and field leadership. His commitment led him to attend Ohio State’s summer and winter practice sessions, where he honed his skills under the mentorship of current and former drum majors. This rigorous preparation culminated in his appointment as the 2023-2024 head drum major, making him the first Dover High School alumnus to hold this esteemed position.

Leading The Best Damn Band in the Land

As head drum major, Callender’s responsibilities extend beyond leading the band during performances. He plays a pivotal role in upholding the band’s storied traditions and fostering a sense of unity among its members. His leadership was especially evident during high-stakes performances, such as the home game against Michigan and the Rose Bowl appearance against Oregon. Reflecting on these experiences, Callender shared, “As an Ohio State drum major, there are really two things you want to check off the list, and that is a home Michigan game… and a Rose Bowl.”

A Legacy of Mentorship and Community Engagement

Beyond the field, Callender is celebrated for his commitment to mentorship and community involvement. He has dedicated time to guide aspiring drum majors, ensuring the perpetuation of excellence within the Ohio State University Marching Band. His former high school band director, Chris Redd, remarked on his character, noting, “He was always a dedicated musician… He would take time out of his schedule… He’s just a great mentor.”

Balancing Academics and Leadership

While excelling in his role as drum major, Callender has also maintained a strong academic record as a third-year accounting major. Balancing rigorous academic commitments with the demanding schedule of the marching band exemplifies his dedication and time management skills. Looking ahead, he aspires to become a certified public accountant, demonstrating a commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

A Proud Moment for Ohio State University

Callender’s receipt of the Best Drum Major Gold Medal not only highlights his personal achievements but also brings immense pride to Ohio State University and the broader community. Superintendent Karie McCrate expressed, “On behalf of all of us at Dover Schools, we could not be more proud of him.”
