The incident took place in the sixth inning of the game when Bassitt, visibly frustrated by a series of calls from the home plate umpire, exchanged heated words with the officiating crew. The altercation escalated when Bassitt made an aggressive gesture towards the umpire, prompting immediate ejection from the game.

MLB officials reviewed the incident and concluded that Bassitt’s actions were in violation of the league’s code of conduct. The suspension will sideline the pitcher for five games, effective immediately. In addition to the suspension, Bassitt has been fined an undisclosed amount.

Toronto Blue Jays’ manager, John Schneider, expressed disappointment over the incident but stood by his player, stating, “Chris is a passionate competitor, and sometimes emotions can get the better of even the best athletes. We respect the league’s decision and will support Chris as he serves his suspension.”

Bassitt, who has been a key player for the Blue Jays this season, issued a statement apologizing for his actions. “I deeply regret my behavior during the game. My emotions got the best of me, and I apologize to my teammates, the fans, and the umpiring crew. I accept the league’s decision and will use this time to reflect and come back stronger.”

The Blue Jays are currently in a tight race for a playoff spot, and Bassitt’s absence will be a significant blow to their pitching rotation. The team will look to their bullpen and other starters to step up during this critical period.
