His standout performance came in an upset victory over Ole Miss, where he threw for 243 yards and a touchdown.

 

Despite these contributions, the Wildcats’ offense struggled, averaging an SEC-low 20.6 points per game and leading the conference with 17 interceptions. In the final game of the regular season, Vandagriff was replaced by freshman quarterback Cutter Boley, signaling a potential shift in the team’s direction.

 

Rather than entering the transfer portal again, Vandagriff chose to conclude his football career, leaving one year of eligibility unused. His decision comes amid significant changes in Kentucky’s quarterback lineup, including the recent addition of transfer quarterback Zach Calzada from Incarnate Word.

 

Vandagriff’s football journey began with high expectations. Initially committing to Oklahoma, he later chose Georgia, where he spent three seasons primarily as a backup. Vandagriff, who transferred to Kentucky for the 2024 season after limited playing time at Georgia, passed for 1,593 yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions over 11 games. He did not participate in the Wildcats’ season finale against Louisville.

 

Initially, Vandagriff was a highly touted recruit in the 2021 class, originally committing to Oklahoma before switching to Georgia. During his tenure with the Bulldogs, he found himself behind quarterbacks Stetson Bennett and Carson Beck, leading to minimal playing opportunities. Seeking more game time, he transferred to Kentucky following the 2023 season.

 

At Kentucky, Vandagriff’s performance was inconsistent; he was benched twice and surpassed 200 passing yards in only two games. A notable setback occurred on November 2, when he sustained a concussion during a 28-18 loss to then-No. 7 Tennessee, after accumulating 123 passing yards midway through the third quarter.

 

In the wake of Vandagriff’s retirement, Kentucky has secured former Incarnate Word quarterback Zach Calzada from the transfer portal. Calzada, who started for Texas A&M in 2021, is set to begin his seventh college football season in 2025.

 

Additionally, quarterback Gavin Wimsatt has entered the transfer portal after throwing four interceptions in 39 attempts this season. Freshman Cutter Boley started in the 41-14 loss to Louisville.

 

Vandagriff’s decision to retire concludes a collegiate career that began with significant promise but faced challenges in securing a consistent starting role. His future plans beyond football have not been publicly disclosed.
