Seahawks sign cornerback, waive 2023 preseason standout

The Seahawks continue to shuffle the bottom-end of their 90-man roster ahead of Saturday’s preseason opener.

The Seattle Seahawks have been busy with minor roster transactions at the bottom-end of the depth chart. That activity continued on Thursday with the signing of UDFA rookie defensive tackle Mario Kendricks, while fellow DT Rodney Matthews was let go.

John Schneider’s latest move is to sign undrafted rookie cornerback Willie Roberts to the active roster. The former Louisiana Tech star recorded five interceptions in his two seasons with the Bulldogs, and he was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award as the top defensive back in college football.

Unfortunately, defensive tackle Matt Gotel has been waived/injured to make room on the 90-man roster. Gotel was one of the preseason standouts along the defensive line last year, and spent most of the 2023 season on the practice squad. If Gotel clears waivers he’ll revert to injured reserve.

In case you’re wondering about Connor Williams, Mike Macdonald confirmed after Thursday’s practice that he will arrive in Seattle this weekend, and everything else will be figured out from there. The Seahawks would have to waive someone else to get the former Miami Dolphins center on the team.
