The Grammy-winning singer and musician Burna Boy was allegedly paid by the multinational label Atlantic Records to join the group as early as 2017, according to popular Nigerian rapper Phenom.
Phenom disclosed that the transaction was purportedly arranged by American-Nigerian music executive Matthew “Baus” Adesuyan, the proprietor of Atlantic Records’s Atlantic Records mini-label, Bad Habit.
In a recent interview with The Yarns podcast, the Murder Dem crooner discussed a number of topics. He said that the African Giant had gotten an advance from Atlantic Record Label in 2017 amounting to $5 million.
When Phenom was asked if he would think about going back into the studio as a rapper, he said this. He disclosed that his sole incentive to return to the business could be money.
If you really want someone like me to rap, give me $1 million. Lock me up in the studio. Those rapping in America, they [music executives] give them big contracts. Even before Burna Boy made a comeback to music, the guy that gave him the connection to Atlantic Records [Matthew ‘Baus’ Adesuyan], they gave him [Burna Boy] $5 million when he was coming back.
He said.
Using Odumodublvck as an example, Phenom continues, saying that if he were offered a significant pay reduction, he would alter his musical approach.
If someone like Odumodublvck is given $100,000 advance by his label, he will have to drop rap, start singing and enter TikTok to make it back for the label.
He said.
The topic of whether rap music in general helps Nigerian rappers and whether this lack of profit is one of the reasons why these musicians frequently change up their sounds these days is once again highlighted by this interview.
